Hybrid technology
ZRACE BR-005 is a mechanical/hydraulic hybrid vehicle that can be used with standard levers: a standard brake cable connects the lever to the forearm on the caliper body, and then operates the hydraulic master cylinder piston. The piston pushes the mineral oil through the main body to the driven piston, and then the driven piston squeezes the gasket onto the rotor. Compared with purely mechanical disc brakes (such as TRP Spyre or Avid's workhorse BB7), the claimed advantages of hybrid calipers include increased power, a more aggressive feel, and better resistance to weather and road dirt.
One of the biggest improvements is the size, ZRACE BR-005 is very compact. Even compared with TRP Hy/Rd, which can be said to be the best in its class, ZRACE BR-005 is smaller and lighter. The actual weight of each caliper is only 165 grams (with brake pads but no mounting hardware), plus 83 grams for the included 140 mm diameter six-bolt rotor-not exactly feathery, but more than 100 grams lighter per TRP .
Compared to the TRP's more closed shape, this slimmer design also allows the open rear window to provide better airflow on the cushion, plus Shimano-compatible cushions are installed from the top for easy replacement. A small tool-free adjuster dial can also adjust the angle of the arm relative to the piston shaft, and the user can adjust the feel and strength of the lever according to the selected angle.
